Weaving Through I: Through My Lens
Documentary Photography Exhibition | Shanghai, 2024

Artist's Statement
Amos Oz, author of A Tale of Love and Darkness, once said, “We traverse the horizontal flow of time within the vertical stream, seeking meaning and value.”
I was twelve when I first froze a moment behind the lens—a classmate mid-leap, suspended in time. I thought photography was about capturing what I saw from a distance. Then everything shifted.
During a photojournalism course, I learned about “dancing with the environment.” Last summer, while interning on an original musical production, I worked directly with actors preparing for opening night. One afternoon, I watched a performer struggle through a scene, doubt flickering across her face, then persist. When I showed her my photographs later—her exhaustion, her resolve, her quiet determination—she wept. She said no one had ever really *seen* her like that before. That moment changed how I understand my role entirely.
I realized a photographer’s power isn’t in hidden observation; it’s in bearing witness. By truly engaging with my subjects, I honor their stories in ways distant documentation never could. My photographs became acts of advocacy—telling viewers: these artists matter, their struggles matter, they deserve your attention and support.
Henri Cartier-Bresson wrote, “Photography is not merely a record of reality; it is an interpretation of what we see.” A frame holds infinite narratives. Through mine, I seek to illuminate the overlooked, amplify unheard voices, and challenge audiences to see humanity more deeply.
Through my lens, I aspire to explore the rich nuances of human experience and the multifaceted nature of social reality.
A Letter from Danielle Picard-Sheehan
In this world where light and shadow intertwine, every face and every moment tells a unique story. My student, Celine Ge, with her exceptional talent and profound love for the art of photography, presents her inaugural documentary photography exhibition, titled "Weaving Through."
Celine has been an exemplary student in our Photography program at George School in Pennsylvania. Over the past two years, she has immersed herself in analog and darkroom photography as well as Digital Imaging, demonstrating significant artistic growth and developing a profound passion for the craft. Celine's artistic focus centers on street photography in both China and New York City of America. Her work captures individuals of all ages with a deep sense of humility and respect. Many of her pieces poignantly portray the solitude found amidst the hustle and bustle of urban life, while others offer a thoughtful juxtaposition of traditional Chinese life against the vibrant perspectives of the youth. Through her lens, Celine beautifully expresses her joie de vivre and an appreciation for people from all walks of life.
I am immensely proud of Celine's dedication and hard work, culminating in her first exhibition. I have no doubt that this is just the beginning of a prolific artistic journey for her. I eagerly anticipate witnessing her continued growth and future achievements as an artist. Enjoy her work!
